International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) by Quantum Astronomy Education

The International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) is an annual academic competition organized by Quantum Astronomy Education for students in classes 1–12, designed to assess and enhance their knowledge of astronomy, space science, astrophysics, and related fields. The Olympiad curriculum is crafted to ignite curiosity, promote scientific thinking, and provide young learners with a global platform to showcase their talent in astronomy.

As highlighted in the National Education Policy (NEP), Olympiads play a vital role in fostering problem-solving skills, critical reasoning, analytical ability, and scientific temperament among students. The IAO prepares participants not only for competitive examinations but also to pursue higher studies and careers in astronomy, astrophysics, aerospace engineering, and allied sciences.

International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) Exam Pattern & Syllabus

The International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) challenges students to test their knowledge, analytical skills, and scientific approach in astronomy and related fields. The exam is conducted at multiple levels based on class groups.

• Exam Format: Multiple-choice questions, reasoning-based questions, and problem-solving tasks.
• Topics Covered (Class-wise):
  • Classes 1–5: Solar System, constellations, day and night, eclipses, phases of the Moon, basic space science.
  • Classes 6–8: Stars and galaxies, space exploration, telescopes, comets, asteroids, space missions, black holes.
  • Classes 9–10: Laws of motion, gravity, astrophysics fundamentals, cosmology basics, satellites, rocket science.
  • Classes 11–12: Advanced astrophysics, relativity, nuclear fusion in stars, exoplanets, cosmology, observational astronomy.

The syllabus is designed to combine theoretical knowledge with application-based understanding, helping students to think critically and scientifically.

Eligibility Criteria

Students from Classes 1–12 are eligible to participate in the International Astronomy Olympiad. Each student can appear only for their respective class-level Olympiad. No additional eligibility restrictions apply.

How to Participate

• Students must apply through their respective schools, which will coordinate with Quantum Astronomy Education.
• Applications must be submitted at least 30 days before the exam date.
• Individual applications are not accepted.

Exam Dates – 2025–26

Level 1 Dates:

• 30th September 2025
• 15th October 2025
• 5th November 2025

Further rounds, if applicable, will be announced after the completion of Level 1 exams.

Sample Papers

Quantum Astronomy Education provides sample question papers for the IAO to help students prepare effectively. These papers introduce students to the exam structure and difficulty level. Practicing with these resources will strengthen their conceptual clarity, improve accuracy, and boost confidence for the Olympiad.
